About the Play: Blinded in an accident eight years previously, Tom, an ex-cabbie, wallows in his misery until Edna, a home-visit volunteer with problems of her own, stumbles into his life. The result is a ‘desperately’ funny play with something important to say about beating the odds. "Geoghan brings his audience to its feet cheering.” - L.A. Times
About the Playwright: Jim Geoghan began his career as a comedian and quickly moved to writing for big names like Gary Shandling, David Brenner, then on to writing for popular American sit-coms. His critically-acclaimed play Only Kidding ran off-Broadway for 500 performances. Light Sensitive has been equally rewarded with acclaim and has been playing to audiences since 1993 gathering seven Drama-Logue Awards.
About the Company: Island Theatre is the sister company of Nanaimo's Western Edge Theatre, "created," says artistic producer Frank Moher, "to do the sorts of plays that Western Edge doesn't." So far these have included the musical The Fantasticks, Neil Simon's Sweet Suites (both seen on Gabriola), The Cotton Patch Gospel, which was first performed on Gabriola before touring to Nanaimo and Parksville. Light Sensitive marks the company`s debut at the Gabriola Theatre Festival.
About the Director: Frank Moher is a busy guy! He is a director, actor, playwright, teacher and Artistic Producer of both Western Edge and Island Theatres. Previous productions for Western Edge include: The Goat, Supreme Dream, Tuesdays with Morrie, John and Jen, Sugar Daddies, My Name is Rachel Corrie, The Odd Couple, and numerous staged readings for the New Waves Festival. Other theatres at which he has directed include: the National Arts Centre, The Banff Centre, and TheatreOne. Also a playwright, his plays have been seen across North America and abroad.
